Planning an international production involves many creative, technical, and logistical considerations. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about filming in Guatemala and working with Guatemala Film Connections.
PRODUCTION SERVICES
1. What production services does Guatemala Film Connections provide?
We provide local production support from initial planning through wrap. Our services include line production, budgeting, pre-production, location scouting, permit coordination, local crew and talent, equipment rental, transportation, accommodations, casting, customs assistance, translation, security coordination, and on-set logistics.
2. What types of productions do you support?
We support feature films, television series, documentaries, commercials, branded content, photography projects, music videos, fashion productions, and independent films. Our services can be adapted to both small visiting crews and larger international productions.
3. Can you manage the entire local production?
Yes. We can serve as your local production partner and coordinate the project from initial research and budgeting through pre-production, filming, and wrap. We can also provide individual services if your production only requires assistance with locations, permits, crew, equipment, transportation, or another specific area.
4. What information should I send to request an estimate?
Please provide a brief project description, anticipated filming dates, number of shooting days, estimated crew size, location requirements, equipment needs, and any special logistical considerations. A script, treatment, mood board, or reference images are also helpful when available.
5. How far in advance should we contact you?
We recommend contacting us as early as possible. Small projects may require several weeks of preparation, while larger productions, complex locations, archaeological sites, extensive casting, or equipment importation may require several months. We can also evaluate urgent requests depending on availability and project requirements.
LOCATIONS AND PERMITS
6. Can you help us find filming locations?
Yes. We offer creative location research, preliminary scouting, location reports, photographs, video, technical scouting, property-owner negotiations, permit coordination, and on-location management. We can begin the search remotely using your script, visual references, and production requirements.
7. What types of locations are available in Guatemala?
Guatemala offers colonial architecture, modern cities, Maya archaeological sites, volcanoes, lakes, mountains, highlands, rainforests, beaches, Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, rural communities, plantations, historic estates, roads, and private properties—all within a relatively compact country.
8. Can Guatemala double for other countries or historical periods?
Guatemala’s geographic, cultural, and architectural diversity allows certain locations to represent other parts of Latin America, the Caribbean, tropical regions, rural settings, and different historical periods. The suitability of each location depends on the creative and technical requirements of the project.
9. Do we need permits to film in Guatemala?
Permit requirements depend on the location, project size, equipment, and type of filming activity. Public streets, municipalities, protected areas, archaeological sites, parks, private properties, drone operations, and traffic control may require different permissions. We identify the appropriate authorities and help coordinate the application process.
10. How long does it take to obtain filming permits?
Processing times vary according to the location and the authorities involved. Private properties may sometimes be arranged quickly, while archaeological sites, protected areas, public roads, drone operations, and complex municipal locations may require considerably more time.
We recommend beginning the process at least four weeks in advance whenever possible. However, approval times cannot be guaranteed and may vary for each project.
11. Are location fees included in the production estimate?
Location fees vary according to the property, municipality, filming activity, crew size, preparation days, exclusivity, and potential impact on the location. Once the project requirements are defined, we can research and negotiate the applicable fees and include them in the production estimate.
12. Can you assist with environmentally or culturally sensitive locations?
Yes. Productions working in protected environments, Maya archaeological sites, Indigenous communities, or culturally significant locations require respectful planning and advance coordination.
We work with the appropriate authorities, community representatives, local guides, property owners, and location managers to help productions understand and follow the applicable protocols.
CREW, TALENT AND EQUIPMENT
13. Is experienced local crew available?
Yes. Guatemala has experienced professionals working in production, camera, lighting, grip, sound, locations, art, wardrobe, hair and makeup, transportation, casting, and other departments.
We assemble the local crew according to the scale, schedule, creative requirements, and budget of each production.
14. Can you provide local actors, extras, and specialized talent?
Yes. We can coordinate casting for principal and supporting roles, day players, extras, stand-ins, models, children, multilingual performers, musicians, dancers, artisans, and specialized local talent.
Casting searches are developed according to the project’s creative brief, schedule, and budget.
15. Is production equipment available for rent in Guatemala?
Camera, lighting, grip, sound, drone, generator, communications, and other production equipment can be sourced locally, depending on availability.
We review the project’s technical requirements and help assemble an appropriate equipment package. Advance reservations are recommended, especially for specialized equipment or larger productions.
16. Can we bring our own filming equipment into Guatemala?
Professional filming equipment may be brought into Guatemala through the applicable customs procedure. Requirements depend on the type and value of the equipment, its country of origin, method of transportation, and length of stay.
Productions should not travel with professional equipment without coordinating the required documentation in advance. We can assist with the process through an experienced customs broker.
17. Can you coordinate drone filming?
Yes. We can help coordinate professional drone services with experienced local operators. Drone operations are subject to aviation regulations, location restrictions, weather conditions, and possible authorization from the appropriate authorities.
Drone requirements should be reviewed in advance for every location.
TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS
18. Can you arrange transportation and production logistics?
Yes. Depending on the project, we can coordinate airport transfers, crew vans, production vehicles, equipment transportation, local drivers, accommodations, domestic flights, boats, four-wheel-drive vehicles, catering, communications, and transportation to remote locations.
19. Are production trailers and mobile facilities available?
Traditional production trailers are not as widely available as in major international production centers. However, practical alternatives may be arranged depending on the location and production needs.
These may include tents, mobile dressing areas, production vehicles, nearby accommodations, private holding areas, and customized basecamp solutions.
20. Is reliable internet and electrical power available?
Internet and electrical service are generally accessible in cities and established production areas. Connectivity and power may be limited in remote communities, jungles, mountains, or archaeological locations.
Portable internet, radios, generators, backup power, and other communication solutions can be evaluated according to the location and project requirements.
TRAVEL, SAFETY AND WORKING CONDITIONS
21. Do international crew members need a visa?
Entry and immigration requirements depend on each traveler’s nationality, length of stay, and professional activities in Guatemala.
Visiting crew members should confirm whether they require a visa or any additional authorization before traveling. Requirements may change, and final confirmation should be obtained from the appropriate Guatemalan authorities.
22. Is Guatemala safe for international productions?
Many areas regularly visited by international productions and travelers can be managed safely with informed planning and reliable local coordination.
Security requirements vary according to the location, schedule, equipment, crew size, and type of production. We evaluate local conditions and can help coordinate professional transportation, local guides, private security, or communication with the appropriate authorities when necessary.
23. What insurance is required?
International productions should carry appropriate insurance coverage for cast, crew, equipment, vehicles, general liability, travel, and medical emergencies.
Certain locations, property owners, equipment suppliers, or service providers may request proof of insurance before confirming access or services. Insurance requirements should be reviewed individually for each production.
24. What is the weather like in Guatemala?
Weather conditions vary considerably by region and elevation. Guatemala generally has a dry season and a rainy season, but the coast, highlands, rainforests, Petén, and Guatemala City can experience very different temperatures and weather patterns.
We consider seasonal conditions, road access, daylight, altitude, and possible contingency plans during pre-production.
BUDGETS, TAXES AND INCENTIVES
25. Is filming in Guatemala cost-effective?
Guatemala can offer competitive production value, particularly when local crew, equipment, transportation, and production services are planned efficiently.
Final costs depend on the scale of the project, locations, permits, imported equipment, travel requirements, crew size, filming schedule, and technical needs. We prepare project-specific estimates rather than applying a standard price to every production.
26. Are there film tax incentives in Guatemala?
Guatemala does not currently have a standardized national film rebate or tax-credit program for international productions.
Film legislation has been under consideration, but productions should not include any proposed incentive in their budgets unless it has been officially approved and implemented.
27. Are taxes added to production services?
Local taxes may apply to products and services purchased in Guatemala. The standard Value Added Tax (VAT/IVA) rate is currently 12%.
Tax treatment may vary according to the vendor, service, contract, and production structure. Each production should obtain qualified accounting or tax advice for its particular circumstances.
