Guatemala’s colonial history is present in the architecture that still stands today. Guatemala’s colonization occurred in the 16th century, when Spanish conquistadors first arrived; the nation remained under Spanish control for several hundred years.

The ruins left by the Maya are the remnants of a civilization going back 5,000 years ago. The remaining constructions are the living testimony of the sophisticated lifestyle they had.

Folklor and Traditions

Guatemalans have a strong cultural heritage that blends indigenous Mayan, European, and Caribbean influences. Today, the ethnic diversity is visible in the various languages and lifestyles that exist throughout the country. The population is also on the rise — in fact, Guatemala is one of the fastest growing countries in all of Latin America.

Guatemala is crossed by a large chain of volcanoes. Between Mexico in the north and the neighbors to the south (Honduras & Salvador), there are no less than 300 volcanic structures, of which 37 are recognized as volcanoes. Three of them are active today!

Lakes formed the life-giving center of many of Guatemala’s indigenous cultures. Mayan villages sprang up along the shores of Lake Atitlán and Lake Petén Itzá, and many have remained to this day. Lake Petén Itzá and Lake Izabal are two of the largest lakes in Guatemala.

The waterfalls in Guatemala are located deep in the country’s cloud forests. Mainly, they are considered as a stream of water located at different heights. Normally, they flow into a river bed or a water source.

Guatemala is a land of rugged mountains, thick rainforests, and lovely rivers. The rivers often descend from mountains and empty their contents into oceans or lakes. Exploring one of Guatemala’s rivers can be fun and fulfilling.
